Birthing Kit – Dam Supplies

 

 

Iodine scrub soap (e.g. Betadine Scrub)

To clean perineum (genital area)

 

4 x 4 gauze pads

To clean perineum (genital area)

 

Lubricating gel – water based such as K-Y Jelly, large amount.

(do not use a petroleum based lubricant like Vaseline)

To be used if performing internal exam or adjustment

 

Disposable plastic gloves (long sleeved)

To be used if performing internal exam or adjustment

 

Vet wrap or similar cling material

To wrap the tail

 

Forceps

To hold and clip the tail to the back – out of the way for exam.

 

 

 

 

Birthing Kit – Cria Supplies

 

 

0.5% chlorhexidine (Nolvasan), preferred over iodine

To treat cria’s umbilical cord

 

35mm film canister or similar small container

To hold the iodine against the cria’s belly

 

Small wide mouth jar (like a jelly jar?) with heavy string soaked in iodine orNavel clamp

To tie off or clamp off umbilical cord

 

Cria Scale

Initial and on-going weight checks

 

Bulb syringe

May be needed to clear airway

 

Stomach tube & feeding syringe

In case Cria is unable to nurse

 

Enema (DOSS – Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate)

In case cria does not defecate normally

 

Bo-Se (1 mg/ml selenium and 50 mg/ml  Vit E) & syringe  (Note:  do not use Mu-Se)

Only in areas that are selenium deficient.

 

Vitamin supplement (vit D or E for example)

Appears in some references but not all.

 

Hand-held hair dryer

To dry off or to warm the cria

 

Frozen goat or cow colostrum

In case cria needs colostrum

 

Cria coat

In case baby gets a chill.

 

Lamb nipples and plastic bottle

In case we have to feed the cria

 

Blood sample kit

To draw blood to test IgG levels.
